The more society moves into the digital realm, the more disassociated we become from a consciousness that our digital behaviours have impacts. We may feel a sense of guilt every time we throw away a piece of single-use plastic, yet we store gigs of data without seeing the connection to the climate crisis.

Every time we download an email, we contribute to global warming. Every time we tweet, do a search, check a webpage, we create pollution. “The Cloud” isn’t in the air, it’s on land in physical buildings packed full of computers hungry for energy. It seems invisible. It seems cheap and free. It’s not. Digital costs the Earth.

  • Did you know if you spend a few minutes of your next Zoom call with video on and then switch to audio, you could reduce your environmental impact of the call by 90%?
  • Did you know that 70% of physical waste from digital manufacturing and disposal is exported to poorer nations?
  • If you want to reduce the carbon footprint of your site, do know if you should save a document as a PDF or HTML? Do you use Javascript or CSS?

Gerry MacGovern, the author of World Wide Waste, has designed this course to raise awareness of the impact of digital and help digital designers make more earth-informed decisions. In order for life to continue to thrive, designers must consider not only the user experience (UX) but the earth’s experience and the impacts of what we design.

What to expect

In the format of a 3-hour, interactive workshop, Gerry will share key insights about digital waste that will stay with you long beyond the course. You will be challenged to examine your own digital behaviours and collect practical tips for making positive changes to your own life and influencing your team and organisation.

  • How to shift your purchasing and repair behaviours to reduce your environmental impact by understanding the lifecycle of the physical tools - phones, tablets, computers - used to interact with the digital world.
  • How to manage personal and business data in a way that reduces environmental impacts.
  • Ways to build better for digital to manage the digital footprint for your organisation while educating others and having a greater impact at scale.
