COVID-19 crises around the world have shown a need for bottom-up, co-created community-based responses in addition to the top-down scientific approaches that are generally deployed quickly, in some regions in military style. However, these top-down approaches do not actually understand how these fit into people’s daily realities. A possible solution comes straight out of HCD: the people closest to the problem are the ones who should solve it.
This solution does not apply to the COVID-19 crisis alone, it is beneficial in many situations where communities need to be more resilient to thrive. There are opportunities to rethink big complex systems like public health in ways that allow communities to help manage their own health. The same applies to other big systems like food, energy, waste, transport or safety, for that matter. How can people organise themselves around societal problems, in different places around the world?
The HCD-driven practices of the trainers on this master class often aim to unlock the potential in communities to create solutions themselves, through co-creation. Together with you, the participants in the Master Class, we will reflect on our diverse practices and create insights that everyone can all bring into their own work. This will help you to identify how you can move beyond HCD, to Life Centred Design.
This 3.5 hour Master Class is delivered by practitioners in Mexico, Europe, Canada and South Africa from the Reach Network, a global network of studios, each with more than a decade of practice in HCD and now focusing on specific purposes such as care, planet and work. We will encourage you and your fellow course participants to form a lasting peer-to-peer community beyond the Master Class as well.
How communities can collaborate, exchange and have fruitful dialogues with organisations and other communities is at the core of this master class. We should stop the wishful thinking that social projects so often rely on, and start to create realistic solutions. Joining this master class will help you to turn things around in your work and community and move from just sitting and talking to doing.
